Container ship operated by Seaspan Corporation seen on the Tejo River leaving Lisboa in May 2014. This container ship, named "Seaspan Chiwan" and registered IMO 9224312, is built in South Korea by Samsung Heavy Industries (Geoje Shipyard) ¹ and completed in 2001 with yard number 1343. It has an overall length of 852.4 ft and can carry about 4250 TEU. It uses a 37 493 kW (50 976 hp) MAN B&W 8K90MC-C main engine and a Mecklenburger Metallguss fixed pitch propeller. Top speed is 24.5 knots.
In 2024, Seaspan Corporation ², wholly owned by Atlas Corp., operates a fleet of over 150 container ships, with a total capacity of over 1.9M TEU. Here, a decade earlier, we see the "Seaspan Chiwan" leaving Lisboa, assisted by the tugs "Svitzer Sines" and "Svitzer Funchal" (not visible in the image). The name "Seaspan Chiwan" possibly pays tribute to Chiwan Bay where the important Chiwan Container Terminal (赤湾集装箱码头) is located, part of the Port of Shenzhen, China. ●
