Portugs "Portugs Sines" – Richards Shipbuilders

Tugboat operated by Portugs seen on the Tejo River in March 2024. This tugboat, named "Portugs Sines" and registered PT-104151-RC, is built in England by Richards Shipbuilders (Great Yarmouth) ¹ , completed in 1986 with yard number 583 and originally delivered as "Brightwell" to Alexandra Towing Company (Liverpool). It has an overall length of 94.5 ft and is equipped with two 1282 kW (1720 hp) ² Ruston 6RK270 main engines, providing a tractive effort ³ of 40 tons. Two water monitors. Top speed is 13 knots.  Coming from Harwich, England, this tug arrives in Portugal in 2010, joining the local Svitzer fleet and changing its name from "Svitzer Brightwell" to "Svitzer Sines". In 2019, the Danish company Svitzer, belonging to the Maersk group, which had started its activity in Portugal in 2005 as Svitzer Lisboa after acquiring Lisbon Tugs, sells its local operation to Pioneiro do Rio and Grupo Sousa, giving way to Portugs ⁴ in 2020. REBONAVE "Monforte" – Astilleros Zamakona

Tugboat operated by REBONAVE seen on the Tejo River moored next to Doca de Alcântara, Lisboa ,  in July 2023. This tugboat, named "Monforte" and registered PT-104898-RC, is built in Spain by Astilleros Zamakona (Bilbao) ¹ , completed in 1995 with yard number 319 and originally delivered to Remolcadores de Barcelona named "Montjoi". It has an overall length of 88.6 ft and is equipped with two 1325 kW (1801 hp) ² Ulstein Bergen KRMB-6 main engines and Schottel SRP 1010 ducted azimuth thrusters , providing a tractive effort  ³  of 45 tons (mt). Two water/foam monitors. Top speed is 11 knots.  Established in 1989 and based in Setúbal , REBONAVE ⁴ provides towage services, maritime assistance and rescue operations. In 2024 the fleet comprises 3 ocean-going tugs and 7 coastal tugs. Svitzer "Montebelo" – Scheepswerven v/h H. H. Bodewes

Tugboat operated by Svitzer seen on the Tejo River, Lisboa , in May 2014. This tugboat named " Montebelo " and registered LX-87-RL, is built in The Netherlands by Scheepswerven v/h H. H. Bodewes (Millingen)  ¹ , completed in 1963, yard number 605, and originally delivered to the Nieuwe Rotterdamse Sleepdienst NV under the name " Stroombank "  ² . Steel hull and superstructure. It has an overall length of 86.6 ft and is equipped with two 455 kW (610 bhp)  ³  Stork- Ricardo RHO 218 K main engines and Voith-Schneider cycloidal drives , providing a tractive effort  ⁴  of 13 tons. Top speed is 10 knots. Operating in Portugal since 2005, Svitzer  ⁵  gives way in 2019 to Pioneiro do Rio and Grupo Sousa. Here, we see the " Montebelo " on the Tejo River in front of Cacilhas. Resistência "Alerta" – builder unknown

Tugboat operated by Resistência (Grupo Lutamar)   ¹  seen on the Tejo River, Lisboa , in May 2014. It is the tugboat named " Alerta " and registered LX-101-RL. I do not know its origin  ² . Several published sources say it was completed in 1913 and originally delivered to Sociedade Geral de Comércio, Indústria e Transportes (Lisboa) under the name " Cintra ". Steel hull and superstructure (presumably, original wooden superstructure). It has an overall length of 56 ft and is equipped with a 324 kW (435 hp) Caterpillar main engine, providing a tractive effort  ³  of 7 tons. Top speed is 10 knots.  Due to their relative simplicity and, above all, robustness, tugboats normally have long service lives, with equipment being updated according to the evolution of operational needs. The " Alerta ", small but deep-voiced and sufficiently muscled for its functions, is proof of that and finding it on the Tejo River in 2023 is still a pleasure for many of us. I hope ...

Rebosado "Portel" – H. Parry & Son

Tugboat operated by Rebosado seen on the Tejo River, Lisboa , in May 2014. This tugboat named " Portel " and registered S-16-RC, is built in Portugal by H. Parry & Son (Lisboa/Cacilhas)  ¹ , completed in 1978, yard number C-79, and originally delivered to SOPONATA - Sociedade Portuguesa de Navios Tanques   ² . Steel hull and superstructure. It has an overall length of 108.3 ft and is equipped a 1765 kW (2400 bhp) MWM TBD 500-8(U)E main engine and " Kort " nozzle propeller , providing a tractive effort  ³  of 35 tons. Top speed is 12 knots. Based in Setúbal,  Rebosado  ⁴  provides towage services and maritime assistance. Here, we surprise the eye-catching " Portel " on the Tejo River off Lisboa. Tugboat operated by Resistência (Grupo Lutamar)   ¹  seen at the entrance of Doca de Alcântara, Lisboa , in May 2014. This tugboat named " Lutamar " and registered LX-36-RC, is built in England by Richards Shipbuilders (Lowestoft)  ² , completed in 1966, yard number 483, and originally delivered to R. & J. H. Rea Ltd. (Bristol) under the name " Butegarth ". Steel hull and superstructure. It has an overall length of 83.9 ft and is equipped with a 974 kW (1306 bhp) Lister - Blackstone main engine and steerable " Kort " nozzle propeller , providing a tractive effort  ³  of 20 tons. Top speed is 10 knots. As a note of interest, the " Lutamar ", originally " Butegarth ", belongs to a family of five tugs – " Lowgarth " (1965), " Butegarth " (1966), " Uskgarth " (1966), " Danegarth " (1966) and " Bargarth " (1966).
