Image
Electric multiple unit operated by Euskotren  seen at Amara–Donostia  station  ¹  in October 2008. This electric multiple unit with fleet number 214 ² is built by CAF / Babcock & Wilcox / Westinghouse ³ , included in a series of 20 triple units placed in service by Euskotren betwen 1986 and 2000. Between 1996 and 2000, they became quadruple units, with the addition of a second intermediate trailer. With an overall length (couplers) of 225.8 ft, they can accommodate 386 passengers (260 seated passengers). Equipped with two pantographs and fed by 1500 V DC, this electric multiple unit uses four GEE 326 G-1 traction motors in the motor units, one per bogie. Nominal output is 960 kW (1290 hp). Weight in service is 120 t. Wheelset arrangement is Bo'Bo'+2'2'+2'2'+Bo'Bo' and gauge is 3 ft 3+3⁄8 in. Top speed is 50 mph. Initially intended for metropolitan services on the Bilbao–Plentzia and Bilbao–Lezama lines, these units were transferred from 1995 to s...

CP 3151 – SOREFAME/Alstom

Image
Electric multiple unit operated by CP seen at  Santo Amaro  station on the Cascais Line in February 2023. This 4-car electric unit with fleet number 3151 (coupled to 3-car unit 3262) is a SOREFAME / Alstom build, included in a series of 13 units placed in service in 1998. It results from the rehabilitation by Alstom ² of vehicles manufactured in Portugal in 1958–1982 by SOREFAME. With an overall length (couplers) of 259 ft, the 4-car units can accommodate 208 seated passengers (4x52). Under normal load, they admit 320 standing passengers (4x80). Fed via one pantograph by 1500 V DC, this electric multiple unit uses four traction motors in the motor unit, two per bogie. Nominal output is 960 kW (1287 hp) ³ and starting tractive effort is 105 kN. Weight in service is 147 t. It can run in multiple command, up to 3 units, in different combinations and up to a maximum of 10 cars. Wheelset arrangement is 2' 2'+Bo' Bo'+2' 2'+2' 2' and gauge is 5 ft 5 21⁄32 i...

Trenitalia ETR.500.14 – Consorzio TREVI ETR.500 P

Image
Electric multiple unit operated by Trenitalia seen at Roma Termini station in June 2009. This electric multiple unit with fleet number ETR.500.14 is a Consorzio TREVI ETR.500 P, included in a series of 30 train sets (M+12R+M) placed in service in 2005–2007. With an overall length of 1161.4 ft  ¹ , they can accommodate 671 seated passengers  ¹ . It is perhaps opportune to note that what we perceive as a multiple unit is, from a technical point of view, the coupling of two single-cab electric locomotives of the E.404.600-series, one at each end, to a set of 12 intermediate trailers. Each locomotive, fed via two pantographs, one for 3kV DC, the other for 25Kv AC/50 Hz, uses four asynchronous traction motors. Nominal output (wheels) is 4400 kW (5982 hp) and starting tractive effort is 170 kN. The in-service weight of the multiple unit (M+12R+M) is 642 t. Wheelset arrangement is Bo' Bo'+[12x] 2'2'+Bo' Bo' and gauge is 4 ft 8 1⁄2 in. Top speed is 186 mph. This Conso...

Trenitalia ETR.450.11 – Fiat Ferroviaria ETR.450

Electric multiple unit with active tilting operated by Trenitalia seen at Roma Termini station in June 2009. This electric multiple unit with fleet number 450.11  ¹  is a Fiat Ferroviaria ETR.450, included in a series of 15 9-car train sets  ²  placed in service in 1988–1992. With an overall length of 767.4 ft, they can accommodate 390 seated passengers, 126 of which in first classs. Fed via pantograph by 3 kV DC, this electric multiple unit uses 16 traction motors, two per motor unit, each transmitting movement to the bogie's inner axle, (1A)(A1). Nominal output (wheels) is 5008 kW (6809 hp) and starting tractive effort is 190 kN. Wheelset arrangement is (1A)'(A1)'+(1A)'(A1)'+(1A)'(A1)'+(1A)'(A1)'+2'2'+(1A)'(A1)'+(1A)'(A1)'+(1A)'(A1)'+(1A)'(A1)' and gauge is 4 ft 8 1⁄2 in. Top speed is 155 mph. The maximum tilting angle is 8º. This Fiat Ferroviaria ETR.450 unit is used in high-speed  services. Trenitalia , a...
