DouroAzul "Trafaria Praia" – Hanseatische Werft


Tour boat operated by DouroAzul seen on the Tejo River moored to its temporary pier next to Cais do Sodré, Lisboa, in June 2014. This tour boat, named Trafaria Praia and registered LX-3175-TL, is completed by the Hanseatische Werft in 1960, yard number 12. Steel hull and superstructure. It has an overall length of 92.4 ft and can accommodate around 100 passengers. It uses a Deutz RV 6 M 536 main engine ¹ and a fixed pitch propeller, reaching a top speed of around 10 knots.

This tour boat is originally a Typ IIIc ferry operated by HADAG, the Pöseldorf. Delivered in 1960, it is used in Germany for services in the Hamburger Hafen (Port of Hamburg). After arriving in Portugal in 1996, it is renamed Trafaria Praia and used in the Belém–Porto Brandão–Trafaria regular service. An identical ferry, the Sülldorf, delivered by the Scheel & Jöhnk Schiffswerft to HADAG in 1959 is also acquired, renamed S. Paulus and used in tourist services. Both are added to the Classe Alemã (German-class), formed in 1977 with vessels purchased from HADAG. Thereafter, the class includes the vessels Castelo (Lichtwark), Marvila (Volksdorf), Vouga (Otmarschen), Porto Brandão (Falkenstein), Mouraria (Ottensen), S. Paulus (Sülldorf), and Trafaria Praia (Pöseldorf).

In 2011, the Trafaria Praia leaves the Transtejo fleet and is sent to a shipyard on the south bank of the Tejo River, waiting for the predictable dismantling. However, it is rescued, and after due rehabilitation undertaken at the Navaltagus shipyard, Seixal, it is revealed in 2013 as the official Portuguese contribution to the 55th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia, as a floating pavilion featuring an extensive intervention by plastic artist Joana Vasconcelos. On the outside and enveloping the entire main deck, we find the Great Panorama of Lisbon (21st Century), an installation of Viúva Lamego hand-painted tiles showing a panoramic view of Lisboa prior to the 1755 earthquake. Inside, we find the Valkyrie Azulejo, an installation of blue and white textiles and fairy lights that connects the interior of the ship with its exterior; one might imagine it as the reverse of the mural. ² During the exhibition, the Trafaria Praia is operated in Venezia as a functional artwork on the route Giardini–Punta della Dogana–Giardini. Once the exhibition is over, it is acquired by DouroAzul and used for tours on the Tejo River.

Based in Porto, the origins of DouroAzul go back to1993. DouroAzul operates regular specialized services and occasional services on the Douro River. In 2020, the fleet includes the tour boats Spirit of Chartwell, Amavida, Queen Isabel, Douro Spirit, Douro Queen, Douro Cruiser, Invicta, Alto Douro, Enigma, Winds of Fortune, Carlota do Douro, Catarina do Douro, and Cenários do Douro. Between 2014 and 2017, DouroAzul operates the Trafaria Praia on the Tejo River estuary. Although very appreciated as a functional work of art, its reduced capacity for passengers, as well as the high cost of maintenance, nevertheless limit the potential of this service, and lead to its cancellation. In 2017, the Trafaria Praia is moved to dry dock in the shipyards of Navalria, Aveiro, and made available for sale. Here, we revisit this Trafaria Praia in 2014, moored to its temporary pier near Cais do Sodré, Lisboa, on a splendid summer day. ●

Barco de turismo operado pela DouroAzul visto no Rio Tejo atracado ao seu cais temporário junto ao Cais do Sodré, Lisboa, em Junho de 2014. Este barco de turismo, baptizado Trafaria Praia e registado LX-3175-TL, é completado pelo Hanseatische Werft em 1960, número de construção 12. Casco e superestrutura em aço. Possui um comprimento total de 28,17 m e pode acomodar cerca de 100 visitantes. Utiliza uma máquina principal Deutz RV 6 M 536 ¹ e uma hélice de passo fixo, atingindo uma velocidade máxima de cerca de 10 nós.

Este barco de turismo é originalmente um ferry do Typ IIIc operado pela HADAG, o Pöseldorf. Entregue em 1960, é utilizado na Alemanha em serviços no Hamburger Hafen (Porto de Hamburgo). Após chegar a Portugal em 1996, é rebaptizado Trafaria Praia e utilizado no serviço regular Belém–Porto Brandão–Trafaria. Um ferry idêntico, o Sülldorf, entregue pelo Scheel & Jöhnk Schiffswerft à HADAG in 1959 é também adquirido, rebaptizado S. Paulus e usado em serviços turísticos. Ambos são adicionados à Classe Alemã, formada em 1977 com embarcações adquiridas à HADAG. A partir daí, esta classe inclui as embarcações Castelo (Lichtwark), Marvila (Volksdorf), Vouga (Otmarschen), Porto Brandão (Falkenstein), Mouraria (Ottensen), S. Paulus (Sülldorf), e Trafaria Praia (Pöseldorf).

Em 2011, o Trafaria Praia deixa a frota da Transtejo e é enviado para um estaleiro na margem sul do Rio Tejo, aguardando o previsível desmantelamento. No entanto, é resgatado, e após devida reabilitação levada a cabo nos estaleiros da Navaltagus, Seixal, é revelado em 2013 como a contribuição oficial portuguesa para a 55th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia, como um pavilhão flutuante apresentando uma extensa intervenção da artista plástica Joana Vasconcelos. Do lado de fora e envolvendo todo o convés principal, encontramos o Great Panorama of Lisbon (21st Century), uma instalação de azulejos Viúva Lamego pintados à mão, mostrando uma vista panorâmica de Lisboa antes do terramoto de 1755. No interior, encontramos a Valkyrie Azulejo, uma instalação de tecidos azuis e brancos e luzes de fadas que ligam o interior da embarcação ao exterior; podê-la-emos imaginar como o reverso do mural. ² Durante a exibição, o Trafaria Praia é operado em Venezia como uma obra de arte funcional na rota Giardini–Punta della Dogana–Giardini. Concluída a exibição, é adquirido pela DouroAzul e utilizado em passeios no Rio Tejo.

Baseada no Porto, as origens da DouroAzul recuam a1993. A DouroAzul opera serviços regulares e serviços ocasionais no Rio Douro. Em 2020, a frota inclui os barcos de turismo Spirit of Chartwell, Amavida, Queen Isabel, Douro Spirit, Douro Queen, Douro Cruiser, Invicta, Alto Douro, Enigma, Winds of Fortune, Carlota do Douro, Catarina do Douro, e Cenários do Douro. Ainda que bastante apreciado enquanto obra de arte funcional, a sua reduzida capacidade para passageiros, assim como o elevado custo de manutenção, limitam todavia o potencial deste serviço, e levam ao seu cancelamento. Em 2017, o Trafaria Praia é movido para doca seca nos estaleiros da Navalria, Aveiro, e disponibilizado para venda. Aqui, revisitamos este Trafaria Praia em 2014, atracado ao seu cais temporário junto ao Cais do Sodré, Lisboa, num esplêndido dia de verão. ●

Ferry operated by Transtejo  seen on the Tejo River arriving at Terminal Fluvial do Seixal in July 2019. This ferry of the catamaran type, named "Algés" and registered LX-3168-TL, is an FBM Marine TransCat completed in 1995, yard number 1422. After the disastrous choice of the British operator VODAFONE as my internet provider, which sent my connectivity back into the dark ages and whose mediocre or non-existent service affected five months of publications (September, October, November, December and January), it is finally possible to bypass the obstacle with the support of an interested party. The return to normality should occur from February 20th, closing with sixteen publications the cycle dedicated to passenger vessels in regular or tourist service on the Tejo River. As a note of interest, partly motivated by this disastrous experience with the British operator VODAFONE, I will soon launch a new digital space –  UNPLEASANT | LX . It will be interesting. Carris 2443 – Caetano City Gold MAN 2KD

Bus operated by Carris seen on Avenida Infante Dom Henrique, Lisboa, in May 2019. This bus with fleet number 2443 is a Caetano City Gold MAN 2KD registered in 2005 and included in a series of 50 units, 2401–2450, placed in service in 2005–2006. It has an overall length of 39.4 ft and can accommodate 35 seated passengers and 44 standees (35+44+1). Esteban Urban 90 seats. It uses the MAN 18.280 HOCL-NL chassis with the 206 kW (280 hp) MAN D0836 LOH engine. As a note of interest, the 2451–2500-series, placed in service in 2006, uses the same MAN 18.280 HOCL-NL chassis, but combined with a Marcopolo Viale body.
