TST 440 – Setra S 319 UL

Coach operated by TST seen at Gare do Oriente, Lisboa, in May 2019. This coach with fleet number 440 is a Setra S 319 UL first registered in 2000. From July 2022 ², Transportes Sul do Tejo gives way to Carris Metropolitana/Transportes Sul do Tejo, which serves the municipalities of Almada, Seixal and Sesimbra (Àrea 3) and provides connections to Lisboa. Since then, the fleet has adopted the yellow paint scheme, common to the four operational areas of Carris Metropolitana. Here, we see this Setra S 319 UL on regular service 562, Lisboa (Gare do Oriente)–Setúbal. This fast interurban service includes the crossing of the Tejo River through the Vasco da Gama Bridge, the second longest bridge in Europe.

The acronym Setra derives from Selbsttragende in reference to the self-supporting body, or Selbsttragende Karosserie, a concept applied by Otto Kässbohrer in bus manufacture. The first Setra, the S 8, presented in 1951, combines the self-supported body, comprising a tubular frame covered with sheet metal, with a diesel engine located behind the rear axle. The expression S 8 denotes eight rows of seats (Sitzreihen 8). Presented in 1997, the Setra S 319 UL is an interurban or regional bus (UL, Überlandlinienbus) from the 300-series (3), accepting a maximum of nineteen rows of seats (Sitzreihen 19).

For readers less familiar with this practice, on a bus or a coach, as well as on some other means of public transportation, the seats are attached to the floor and side structures by means of rails, which allow operators to increase or decrease the density of seats in the vehicle, within operational requirements and legal standards. Therefore, we can find identical buses or coaches with different capacities. Normally, buses or coaches for longer or better quality services offer more space between seats. In this case, the Setra S 319 UL accepts a maximum of nineteen rows of seats. ●

Tem um comprimento total de 14,95 m e pode acomodar 71 passageiros sentados e 30 de pé (71+30+1). Assentos Fainsa. Apresenta construção integral e utiliza o motor Mercedes-Benz OM 457 hLA. Este autocarro exibe o pára-brisas inclinado do Setra S 315 GT. Esta variante é por vezes descrita como Setra S 319 UL-GT. GT é a abreviatura de Grand Tourisme. Baseada no Laranjeiro, a TST, abreviação de Transportes Sul do Tejo ¹, opera até meados de 2022 serviços regulares nos concelhos de Alcochete, Almada, Barreiro, Moita, Montijo, Palmela, Seixal, Sesimbra e Setúbal, assim como as respectivas ligações a Lisboa. Assegura ainda serviços regulares especializados e serviços ocasionais. A partir de Julho de 2022 ², a Transportes Sul do Tejo dá lugar à Carris Metropolitana/Transportes Sul do Tejo, que serve os concelhos de Almada, Seixal e Sesimbra (Àrea 3) e assegura ligações a Lisboa. Desde aí, a frota adopta o esquema de pintura em amarelo, comum às quatro áreas operacionais da Carris Metropolitana. Aqui, vemos este Setra S 319 UL no serviço regular, 562, Lisboa (Gare do Oriente)–Setúbal. Este serviço interurbano rápido inclui a travessia do Rio Tejo através da Ponte Vasco da Gama, a segunda mais longa ponte na Europa.

Para os leitores menos familiarizados com esta prática, num autocarro, assim como em alguns outros meios de transporte público, os assentos encontram-se fixados ao piso e às estruturas laterais por meio de calhas, o que permite aos operadores aumentar ou diminuir a densidade de assentos no veículo, dentro das necessidades operacionais e normas legais. Por isso, podemos encontrar autocarros idênticos com capacidades distintas. Normalmente, autocarros destinados a serviços mais longos ou de melhor qualidade oferecem mais espaço entre assentos. Neste caso, o Setra S 319 UL aceita um máximo de dezanove filas de assentos. ●
