TST 277 – Berkhof Ambassador 200


Bus operated by TST seen at Praceta Porto de Lisboa, Trafaria, in November 2019. This bus with fleet number 277 is a Berkhof Ambassador 200 first registered in 2003. It is included in a series of 37 units (241–243, 245–264, 266– 269, and 277–286) delivered in 2010–2011. It has an overall length of 39.4 ft and uses the DAF SB 200 LF chassis with the 136 kW (185 hp) Cummins ISBe 185 engine. This is a former Arriva Nederland vehicle, possibly from the 6171–6189 series, retired at the end of 2009. As a note of interest, SB 200 LF denotes a low-floor (LF) bus chassis (B, bus) with the engine mounted at the back (S, staart or tail), of the 200-series (200). In 2019, based in Laranjeiro, TST, or Transportes Sul do Tejo ¹, operates regular services, regular specialized services, and occasional services. Here, we see this Berkhof Ambassador 200 alongside the Estação Fluvial da Trafaria during a brief pause in the regular service 129, Trafaria–Costa de Caparica. 

Produced between 2001 and 2014, the DAF SB 200 LF chassis is used on low-floor buses with the vertical engine at the rear end. Voith gearboxes. The DAF SB 200 LF chassis can be found with a variety of bodies, including the DAF/VDL Berkhof Ambassador in the Netherlands or the Wright Commander and Wright Pulsar in the United Kingdom. In September 2003, DAF Bus International changes its designation to VDL Bus International, consequently this chassis becomes the VDL SB 200 LF. The Berkhof Ambassador was produced in the Netherlands between 2001 and 2011. Primarily adopted by Dutch and Danish operators, the Ambassador is offered in two versions: the 200, with a length of 39.4 ft and a DAF/VDL SB 200 LF chassis, and the 120, with a length of 34.8 ft and a DAF/VDL SB 120 LF or VDL SB180 LF chassis. It was succeeded by the VDL Citea from 2007 onwards.
