PartyBus – Daimler Fleetline CRG6LXB

Double-deck advertising bus operated by PartyBus seen at Praça da Figueira, Lisboa, in June 2013. This double-deck bus adapted for mobile events and advertising purposes is a Daimler Fleetline CRG6LXB first registered in 1969. It is the former 841 of Carris, included in a series of 50 units, 801–850, placed in service in 1967–1970. It was retired from regular service in 1992. It has a body locally built by the operator and could originally accommodate 79 passengers (H45/34F). Equipped with the Gardner 6LXB engine. In 2013, PartyBus, based in Lisboa, provides various means for mobile events and advertising. Here, we see this Daimler Fleetline CRG6LXB in downtown Lisboa, part of a traveling educational campaign. The "Cat Dog Bus – Animal Health on Wheels" campaign takes place in June and July and promotes a better understanding of hygiene and health care for dogs and cats, with a team of veterinarians on board sharing information and offering practical examples.

As a point of interest, the designation Daimler Fleetline CRG6LXB denotes a commercial vehicle (C, "Commercial") with the Gardner (G) six-cylinder (6) engine of the LX type, in the B evolution (LXB), mounted at the rear (R, "Rear"). The horizontal version was distinguished with the letter H, 6HLXB.

Where Did the Cat Dog Bus Go?

Fleetline Memories

As a kid, I didn't like Daimler Fleetline buses at all. Accustomed to the visceral sway of the AEC Regent and Regal buses over the cobblestones and slopes of Lisbon's streets, these creatures seemed too soft—and too slow. Even when, on route 8, between Martim Moniz and Moscavide, after passing Areeiro, they could stretch their legs and run. Unlike the impressive roar of the Regent and Regal buses, the Fleetline seemed to purr. But they had at least one redeeming feature—on cold winter nights, the rear seats, the five seats next to the engine, were always a guarantee of a pleasantly warm journey. Only later, in the eighties, did I understand, in the pages of English magazines, the virtuosity of these creatures, their remarkable Gardner engine—their historical importance. And from then on I rode in them as much as I could, until their retirement from service in the nineties. Penance served, just in time.
