ALL 4402 – EMD/MACOSA G22U


Diesel-electric locomotive operated by ALL ¹ seen at Presidente Prudente station, on the former Estrada de Ferro Sorocabana, in January 2006. This diesel-electric locomotive with fleet number 4402 is built under license from Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) by Material y Construcciones S.A. (MACOSA) in 1972, construction number 1416, included in a series of 24 units (1607–1630) placed in service by the RFFSA/Rede de Viação Paraná-Santa Catarina em 1973. Overall length (buffers) is 50,8 ft. This locomotive uses a 1230 kW (1650 hp) EMD 645-E "V12" diesel and four MTM D-31 electric traction motors. Nominal output (wheels) is 1119 kW (1500 hp). Weight in service is 73 t. It can run in multiple units. Wheelset arrangement is B-B and gauge is 3 ft 3+3⁄8 in. Top speed is 60 mph. Designated by the manufacturer as G22U, this diesel electric-locomotive is used on freight services. Between 1971 and 1973, EMD/MACOSA produced 129 locomotives of this type for the RFFSA. Here, in January 2006, we see ALL 4402 accompanied by sister ALL 4342 at Presidente Prudente station, both awaiting their next service. ●

Esta locomotiva diesel-eléctrica com o número de frota 4402 é construída sob licença da Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) pela Material y Construcciones S.A. (MACOSA) em 1972, número de fabrico 1416, incluída numa série de 24 unidades (1607–1630) colocada em serviço pela RFFSA/Rede de Viação Paraná-Santa Catarina em 1973. O comprimento total (tampões) é de 15,493 m. Esta locomotiva utiliza um motor diesel "V12" EMD 645-E de 1230 kW (1650 hp) e quatro motores eléctricos de tracção MTM D-31. A potência nominal (rodas) é de 1119 kW (1500 hp). O peso em serviço é de 73 t. Pode circular em unidade múltipla. A disposição do rodado é B-B e a bitola é de 1000 mm. A velocidade máxima é de 97 km/h. Designada pelo fabricante como G22U, esta locomotiva diesel-eléctrica é utilizada em serviços de mercadorias. Entre 1971 e 1973, a EMD/MACOSA produziu 129 locomotivas deste tipo para a RFFSA. Aqui, em Janeiro de 2006, vemos a ALL 4402 acompanhada pela irmã ALL 4342, na estação de Presidente Prudente, ambas aguardando o seu próximo serviço. ●

On a rainy, hot and muggy day, we surprised a pair of EMD/MACOSA G22U locomotives, fleet numbers ALL 4402+4342, arriving in Presidente Prudente. Over the course of several days, it was an interesting experience, observing American equipment manufactured for narrow-gauge use. ● 

Num dia chuvoso, quente e abafado, surpreendemos uma dupla de locomotivas EMD/MACOSA G22U, com os números de frota ALL 4402+4342, a chegar a Presidente Prudente. Ao longo de vários dias foi uma experiência interessante, observar material americano fabricado para utilização em via estreita.●



Over the course of several days, photographing América Latina Logística's trains on the former Estrada de Ferro Sorocabana wasn't difficult. The distinct voice of the G22Us echoed across the horizon, giving me time to choose good locations for the right shots. Sometimes, it was difficult to reach the desired location in the rain, over mud and through dense vegetation inhabited by creatures of questionable temperament, some legless, others with way too many legs. Not to mention the mosquitoes. At one point, I recorded about thirty bites on each leg and an indescribable itch. But it was worth it. ● 

Ao longo de vários dias, não foi difícil fotografar os comboios da América Latina Logística na antiga Estrada de Ferro Sorocabana. A distinta voz das G22U ecoava pelo horizonte e dava-me tempo para escolher bons locais para as devidas fotografias. Difícil, era por vezes chegar ao local desejado debaixo de chuva, sobre a lama e através da densa vegetação povoada por criaturas de temperamento duvidoso, umas sem pernas, outras com pernas a mais. Para não falar dos mosquitos. A dada altura, registei cerca de trinta picadas em cada perna e uma comichão indescritível. Mas valeu a pena. ●

Euskotren 214 – CAF

Electric multiple unit operated by Euskotren  seen at Amara–Donostia  station  ¹  in October 2008. This electric multiple unit with fleet number 214 ² is built by CAF / Babcock & Wilcox / Westinghouse ³ , included in a series of 20 triple units placed in service by Euskotren betwen 1986 and 2000. Between 1996 and 2000, they became quadruple units, with the addition of a second intermediate trailer. With an overall length (couplers) of 225.8 ft, they can accommodate 386 passengers (260 seated passengers). Equipped with two pantographs and fed by 1500 V DC, this electric multiple unit uses four GEE 326 G-1 traction motors in the motor units, one per bogie. Nominal output is 960 kW (1290 hp).
