Marinha Portuguesa UAM 913 "Zêzere" – Arsenal do Alfeite


Auxiliary ship operated by Marinha Portuguesa seen on the Tejo River arriving in Lisboa in April 2024. This auxiliary ship of the monohull type, more specifically a vessel for transporting personnel, identified as UAM 913 "Zêzere" ¹, is built in Portugal by Arsenal do Alfeite ² and completed in 1983 with yard number C124. Steel hull and superstructure. It has an overall length of 111.5 ft. It is equipped with two main engines. Service speed is 12 knots.

With an illustrious history spanning over seven hundred years, the Portuguese Navy is the naval branch of the Armed Forces. Here, greeted by the morning sun, we see the UAM 913 "Zêzere" arriving in Lisboa. Presumably, the name "Zêzere" pays tribute to this tributary of the Tejo River. ●


Navio auxiliar operado pela Marinha Portuguesa visto no Rio Tejo a chegar a Lisboa em Abril de 2024. Este navio auxiliar do tipo monocasco, mais especificamente uma vedeta para transporte de pessoal, identificado como UAM 913 "Zêzere" ¹, é construído em Portugal pelo Arsenal do Alfeite ² e completado em 1983 com o número de construção C124. Casco e superestrutura em aço. Possui um comprimento total de 34 m. Utiliza duas máquinas principais. A velocidade máxima é de 12 nós. 

Com uma ilustre história de mais de setecentos anos, a Marinha Portuguesa é o ramo naval das Forças Armadas. Aqui, saudada pelo sol da manhã, vemos a UAM 913 "Zêzere" a chegar a Lisboa. Presumivelmente, o nome "Zêzere" presta tributo a este afluente do Rio Tejo. ●

It's early morning in April 2024 and the auxiliary ship "Zêzere" leaves the mooring pontoon in Lisboa bound for the Base Naval de Lisboa, located on the south bank of the Tejo River. Note the obvious similarities with the "Cacilhense"-class ferries delivered to Transtejo, including the distinctive funnel design. From what I understand ³, this design by Naval Engineer Baião do Nascimento ⁴ for an 800-passenger ferry was originally intended for Transtejo, but was eventually overlooked in favor of a smaller, 500-passenger version better suited to operational needs and subsequently materialized in the "Cacilhense" and "Monsanto" classes. Eventually, the Portuguese Navy deemed the existing design suitable for personnel transportation on the Tejo River between Lisboa and the Base Naval de Lisboa and proceeded with its construction at the Arsenal do Alfeite. Delivered in 1983, the UAM 913 "Zêzere" has remained a familiar presence on the Tejo River ever since. ● 


É manhã cedo em Abril de 2024 e o navio auxiliar "Zêzere" deixa o pontão de acostagem em Lisboa com destino à Base Naval de Lisboa, localizada na margem sul do rio Tejo. Note-se as evidentes semelhanças com os ferries da classe "Cacilhense" entregues à Transtejo, incluindo o peculiar desenho das chaminés. Tanto quanto julgo saber ³, este projecto da autoria do Engenheiro Naval Baião do Nascimento ⁴ para um ferry com capacidade para 800 passageiros terá sido originalmente destinado à Transtejo, sendo eventualmente preterido a favor de uma versão de menor porte, para 500 passageiros, mais adequada às necessidades operacionais e subsequentemente materializada nas classes "Cacilhense" e "Monsanto". Eventualmente, a Marinha Portuguesa terá considerado o projecto existente adequado às necessidades de transporte de pessoal no Rio Tejo entre Lisboa e a Base Naval de Lisboa e procedeu à sua construção no Arsenal do Alfeite. Entregue em 1983, a UAM 913 "Zêzere" tem permanecido desde aí uma presença familiar no Rio Tejo. ●

Euskotren 214 – CAF

Electric multiple unit operated by Euskotren  seen at Amara–Donostia  station  ¹  in October 2008. This electric multiple unit with fleet number 214 ² is built by CAF / Babcock & Wilcox / Westinghouse ³ , included in a series of 20 triple units placed in service by Euskotren betwen 1986 and 2000. Between 1996 and 2000, they became quadruple units, with the addition of a second intermediate trailer. With an overall length (couplers) of 225.8 ft, they can accommodate 386 passengers (260 seated passengers). Equipped with two pantographs and fed by 1500 V DC, this electric multiple unit uses four GEE 326 G-1 traction motors in the motor units, one per bogie. Nominal output is 960 kW (1290 hp). Ferrocarril de La Robla 207 – SECN

Diesel-hydraulic locomotive formerly operated by Ferrocarril de La Robla seen at the premises of the Basque Railway Museum in Azpeitia in October 2008. This diesel-hydraulic locomotive with fleet number 207 is built under license from the Yorkshire Engine Company (YEC) ¹ by the Sociedad Española de Construcción Naval (SECN) in 1965, included in a series of 8 units (FR 201–208) placed in service by the Ferrocarril de La Robla in 1966–1967. Overall length (buffers) is 23.4 ft. This diesel-hydraulic locomotive uses a 161 kW (219 hp) Rolls Royce C6 TFL "L6" diesel engine. Weight in service is 33.5 t. Wheelset arrangement is C  ²  (wheels with coupling rods) and gauge is 3 ft 3+3⁄8 in. Top speed is approximately 19 mph.
